How the tip is calculated
Tip = bill × (percentage ÷ 100). The grand total is the bill plus the tip, and the per-person figures divide each of those by the number of people.
Tipping is not universal
Service charges are already included in many countries, and in some places tipping is unusual. Check local practice rather than assuming a single rate everywhere.
Common questions
How much should I tip?
Tipping customs vary widely by country and venue. In the United States 15–20% is common in restaurants; in much of Europe and Asia service is included or a small rounding-up is normal. Use the percentage that fits where you are.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Both are used. Enter the bill figure you want to tip on — this calculator applies the percentage to exactly the amount you type.
How is the per-person amount rounded?
Per-person values are computed at high precision and rounded for display using your currency's normal decimal places, so the parts add up to the total.
