Fee = 1000 × (2.9 ÷ 100) + 0.3
Why flat fees hurt small amounts
A 2.9% + 0.30 fee costs 5.9% on a 10 payment but only 3.0% on a 1,000 payment. The effective rate below shows what you are really paying.
Gross-up
To receive an exact amount, divide by the remaining share after the percentage fee rather than adding the percentage back on. Adding 2.9% to 100 gives 102.90, which nets 99.63 — the gross-up figure gives the correct charge.
Common questions
How do I charge so I receive an exact amount?
Gross up: required charge = (target + flat fee) ÷ (1 − percentage ÷ 100). Simply adding the percentage back on undercharges you.
What is the effective fee percentage?
The total fee divided by the gross amount. A flat fee makes small transactions far more expensive in percentage terms.
Does this include currency conversion spread?
Only if you include it in the percentage. Providers often add a conversion margin on top of the stated fee — add it to the percentage to model the real cost.
