Calculator
Sales tax calculator
Add tax to a price or pull the tax back out of a gross total — the same tool works both ways.

Adding versus removing tax
Adding tax multiplies the net price by 1 + rate ÷ 100. Removing tax divides the gross total by the same factor — dividing is not the same as subtracting the percentage, which is the most common mistake here.
Rates are your input, not our assumption
Sales tax, VAT and GST rates change and vary by location and product. We never fill in a rate for you, so the number you see is always based on the rate you entered.
Common questions
How do I remove tax from a total?
Divide the gross total by 1 + (rate ÷ 100) to get the net price, then subtract that from the total to get the tax portion.
Which tax rate should I enter?
Enter the rate that applies to your purchase. Rates differ by country, state, city and product category, and this calculator never guesses one for you.
Does this handle compound or layered taxes?
Enter the combined effective rate. For separately compounded taxes, run the calculator twice using the gross result of the first pass.
