How percentage calculations work
A percentage is simply a fraction of 100. Dividing the percentage by 100 turns it into a multiplier, which you then apply to the value you care about.
Which mode should I use?
- X% of Y — tips, commissions, deposits, VAT-style add-ons.
- Increase / decrease — price changes, salary rises, budget growth.
- Percentage difference — comparing two quotes where neither is the "original".
- X is what % of Y — progress towards a goal, share of a total.
Common questions
How do I calculate X% of Y?
Divide the percentage by 100 and multiply by the number: 20% of 750 = (20 ÷ 100) × 750 = 150.
What is the difference between percentage change and percentage difference?
Percentage change compares a new value against a specific starting value. Percentage difference compares two values against their average, so the order does not matter.
Why does the calculator show more decimals than money usually does?
Percentages are computed at high precision and only rounded for display, so chained calculations stay accurate.
